IMO, "now" is an adverb modify "temperat", so it should be placed next to "temperat".

应该是吧，
解释里说in which 和 where两个都行，
那就只有这个问题了，修饰词位置的问题

请问为什么用一般过去时而不是过去完成时呢？

没有明确表示过去完成时的时间状语，过去完成时一定要能够看出来是在过去之前。

我理解的用过去时的可能原因 是 the concept of age, 这个exist 的动作 确实 是 发生在 propose 以前 ，但它做为 一个concept 的内容 而只能用过去时。
