我对OG解释的理解：
Neanderthals的disappearance是发生在过去的。
equip是发生在disappeared之前的动作。
如果用as equiped，是一般时（present tense），并不能表达这个动作“曾经发生”这个意思。
因此应该改用完成时。


同时，考虑到 in their path指的是这个人种在进化史上的发展道路，
所以应该是单数in their path，而不是in their paths，
所以CD也能排除

我的理解是后面的转折句中VERB是indicates.所以本句的目的在于说明一种状况，所以也用一般现在时。可以这么理解吗？

用过去完成时说明过去的过去，因为N曾经如何如何，but...后内容说明N在时期时代已经灭绝了，因此他们曾经的状态就成了过去的过去（灭绝发生在一个过去，but前面说的发生在灭绝之前。）

appear是说它现在展现在我们面前的状态，因此用一般现在时，和后面的indicates一样
