个人理解：

the kind of curiosity 是特指，由于前面没有提到过，后面应该给与解释，就是说用定语从句，而不是用目的状语。如果是 a kind of curiosity, 用so that就没有问题。

我个人认为是这样的。

so that 是表目的，也就是说 猩猩表现出the kind of curiosity，so that（以便，以致）new pattern of behavior and expression can be passed on。这样说得话，就没有逻辑了，猩猩表现出好奇便于他们的行为和表达可以延续下去。如果按照动物没有意识来说，猩猩根本就不是预先就知道好奇会便于他们的行为和表达可以延续下去。

翻译得拗口一点说……就是猩猩展示某种好奇，通过（一个传给另一个（达通过模仿和练习来传递）的行为和表达）来展示这种好奇。（按照长难句的分解方法就大概是这样吧……）
简单来说，就是猩猩通过行为和表达的延续来展示好奇。
所以 一个传给另一个的行为和表达 是方式，而不是目的。于是用的是by which 而不是 so that。

个人认为不重复，by imitation and practice 是关于pass on , by which  是关于exhibit 的。
