GWD. an overwhelming proportion of women work, 复数women对应work. 而不是an overwhelming proportion 对应works.

both cases are right... surprisingly (is it common that both ets & gwd are right? hehe).
there are some expressions that mean multiple: a number of, a group of... from longman:

Although the majority of offenders are men, a small proportion - about 5 percent - are women.

however, the logical emphasis is on tons for the expression "million tons of stone". stoneren gg's had a few other examples in 第2楼.

在这里building是集合名词吗？还有some tens of thousands of parish churches这里some和tens of thousands of连用还是跳跃修饰churches？

上面的老兄，some应该是修饰tens of thousands of 的，因为churches已经有tens of thousands of 这么多了，还干吗要那几个some！！！

另外，我想知道，根据stoneren斑竹说的“无核心词概念”，是不是说把一个词组看成了一个整体，因而没有了中心词。

2), a proportion of women

我觉得上面这两个词组的性质其实是不同的，因为第一个词组用来辨别单复数的词是tons，而第二个的关键词是women。

不知道这样理解对不对？

第1个例题，不确定。查了一下longman，上面的例子似乎说明 tons of sth.（无论可数、不可数） + 复数动词：

第2个例题就是通常说的：当表示为数量或百分比的时候，由名词决定动词的单复数。即

数量/百分比+ of + 名词 + 谓语
单数名词 + 单数谓语
复数名词 + 复数谓语
不可数名词 + 单数谓语

sb做主语，to表目的ets喜欢。

He'll be back for dinner. => for+N. ETS可以接受
=He'll be back to eat dinner.

He went out for a walk.
=He went out to take a walk.

不過，for+N跟to+V表目的在句意上是有差別的。
做題目還是要分辨一下句意的不同。

我认为在这里把stone当成不可数名词，甚至抽象概念名词。但是由于有tons of，所以中心词是tons，为复数，因此用were。
