recoup is vt, you can use as "recoup sth" 扣除 sth ,恢复sth

However, recoup can be used as:  "recoup sb for sth". 补偿 sb sth. 

when recoup is vi, it is 补偿损失.

根据句子意义, recoup sth 比较合适.
