本人的看法是选B，基于两个原因：

（1）by themselves在but 句中指trucks.那么从逻辑句意上来说就是指“那些trucks自己从生产线上生产出来了”。trucks怎么可能自己生产出来，只能是被生产出来。

而alone则是指那些trucks单独从生产线上生产出来，而不是同cars一起生产出来的。符合整句的逻辑句意，从but前后句意想说明trucks的产量很高。

故排除C.D.E

(2)从语法角度上，比较的用法有：twice（倍数） +n.，表示“是n.的两倍(几倍）”。

语法书上说twice the numbers是错误的用法，即在这样的比较结构中不能用复数numbers.

所以排除A。因为用了复数the numbers

再看B。虽然B中不是用the number,但从逻辑上看是很对的，因为that number正是特指了前面句中的a total of 469000,跟twice the number一样是特指那个数量，就是指“是那个数量两倍的trucks单独从生产綫上生产出来”。（指trucks今年的产量很高）。没有任何错误。

PS：如果A中的numbers改成number，则A也和B一样对的。

对于twice that number 还是有点疑惑：

如果这道题选B,我认为也不是通过twice的用法来排除，而是alone和by themselves的细微差别来排除的

看了前面的帖子，偶已基本确认C是错误的，可对B的that指代还是存在疑虑，如果that指代a total of 469000，那逻辑意思就有问题了，不成了说是469000的2倍了？那又怎么能trucks alone呢？请指教

大家一直争论的twice the number of 和此处twice that number of  并不是一个意思。

"twice the number "常见的用法是　A， twice the number of B... 即A 是B的两倍, 如果按照这个意思走的话，本题的后半句就应该是, but in 1929 trucks alone, almost twice the number of cars and trucks in 1914, came off the assembly lines.

而此处"twice that number of "trucks “相当于"a certain number of " trucks 的意思，只是certain number 刚好等于469,000的两倍。

不知道这样说，大家是否清楚一些了。
