2.B, because A is not parallel and C/D/E is duplicated in meaning(of and 's).

Choice B is obviously wrong, because the verb "were" does not agree with "the metabolism".

In 1914 a total of 469,000 cars and trucks were produced in the United States, but in 1929 almost twice the numbers of tucks alone came off the assembly lines.

  1. the numbers of tucks alone

  2. that number of trucks alone

  3. the number of trucks by themselves

  4. as many trucks themselves

  5. as many trucks by themselves

Longman:

alone有一个意思是without including anything else

例子是The case will cost thousands of pounds in legal fees alone

1. if you are alone in a place, there is no one with you synonym by yourself

She lives alone .
You shouldn't leave a child alone in the house.
My wife and I like to spend time alone together away from the kids.

5. without including anything else

The case will cost thousands of pounds in legal fees alone.

Agree. A is the best.

Q14,Q28 up B,A

C更错误,those of...

欧选了 B, A.

用google查,没有twice that number这种表达法,查出来的都是twice the number

I have googled the usage of "twice that number of ....", I copied the result here, it seems it is justified.

In Switzerland, 50,000 signatures on a petition, a bit over 1% of the current total of qualified voters, are enough to haul any new countrywide law before a vote of the whole people. Twice that number of signatures will put a brand-new idea for a law to the people's decision, even if parliament wants nothing to do with it.

the above sentence is drawn from this website :  http://www.bcinitiative.com/article3.htm

14题,大家都在讨论THE NUMBER 和THAT NUMBER 的区别,请问 THE NUMBER / THAT NUMBER 能 CAME OFF THE ASEMBLE LINE?

'of' here means 'to or away', in other word, 'from'.

so the original sentence attempts to express:

a: ...the numbers 'from' trucks

b: ...that number 'from' trucks

since 'that' refers to 469,000, also in B, using number rather than numbers. So B is better...
