看不出選A的理由，因為這裡沒有所謂parallel的問題；試看這樣的結構：

joined, was injured..., and was discharged  並沒有平行對稱，而且第二個clause跟前頭的子句之間還少了連接詞，這是明顯有問題的。另外，那個 had become的用法也有問題，在這裡既沒有必要，也很容易造成混淆。

首先, A中用了被动, 不能明确cigarette就是就是use的施动者, 这个是ETS的忌讳之一.

GWD9-15，还是不能认可A的答案

从初中学完成时开始老师就一直强调become是一个瞬间动词，是不可能有完成时态的，如果真的要表示这样一个状态，应该用had been too ill to serve.

选项D没有问题，injured作为分词结构修饰主语，之后的and was discharged与joined并列！
