Whether following the highest standards of ethics is the most effective way for a company to maximize profits over a long period of time has been a heated controversy in contemporary society. Some people maintain that the main goal of businesspeople is to bring profits for their shareholders; therefore, focusing on the ethic standards will be distractive; while others insist that companies and corporations will benefit a lot by following the highest moral standards, as this action will help them gain a good reputation among customers. In my point of view, following the highest moral standards indeed is a good way to maximize profits over a long period of time but not necessarily the most effective one, as this strategy has some flaws and may harm the corporations under certain circumstances.
In the first place, following the highest ethic standards can certainly help a company gain good reputation and trust, elevate the morale and loyalty among employees, and also boost its sales and market share. Take Haier, the world’s 4th largest white goods manufacturer for example, in 1985, its CEO Zhang Ruimin found 76 refrigerators unqualified during an inspection, in order to follow the highest ethic standards, educate its employees, and also follow the concept of 'customers are the foundation of growth', he smashed all of those defects with a big hammer in public. As a result, the company suffered financially in short term. But in the long run, this behavior wins a great reputation among consumers, attracts numerous talented people to work for it and improves its productivity within plants; therefore, in this case, the strategy to follow the highest ethic standards does help Haier form a reliable company image among its consumers and maximize its profits.
In the second place, it is too absolute to claim that following the highest standards of ethics is the best or the most effective way. Although this tactic has worked well in some cases but it does not necessarily mean that this strategy is indispensible. In some cases, this strategy can even be time-consuming and may also harm the business because of the high cost needed to implement it. For example, in 1985, after the unveiling of Macintosh, Apple's new user-friendly personal computer, the company achieved a quite large market share; however, its success did not last long, as several months later its sales began to flop. Normally in this situation, most managers would began downsizing, but under the concept of following the highest moral ethics which is 'never easily fire a employee' and 'guarantee the welfare of his cohorts', Steve jobs even continued to award many employees which further aggravate the company's situation. In consequence, it is not necessarily the case that the most effective way for a businessperson or a firm to pursue its largest profits is to follow those standards, because there are so many other factors such as the implementation of advanced technology or a new marketing plan that could also contribute to maximize profits.
In summary, the issue of whether businesspeople should follow the highest moral standards is a complex one which requires subjective judgment; therefore, there are no specific solutions or certain answers. Different people with different personal experience and emotional concerns might hold different opinions. Citing from the above mentioned cases, I strongly support the conclusion that following the highest standards is an appropriate way to maximize the profits but not the most effective one.
