我的理解哦。。。求指证。
Because....,MOW was.....from 1765 to 1789, 因为如何如何，这个人怎样。前半句就是一个完整的句子。
后半句，一个优势，怎样怎样，又是一个句子。所以要用and连接。
排除了ABC， DE里头，这个优势，结合他写作的才能，and this vantage point, (which was) combined with her talent for writing, made her one of ....of the era.
combined with her talent for writing 插入语，made是后面这个句子的动词。

嗯。。其实我理解LZ为什么觉得when这个词不多余，也确实when在这里翻译成中文整个句子还是很通顺的，但是这个不能用中文的思维去理解。when就是引导最最单纯的时间状从，LZ回忆一下你小时候学when从句时造的句子和这个有什么不同，体会一下这个差别。。。
