本题答案为D.这里有两个问题请教：
1）对于选项E，OG解释中有一条是“Where cannot correctly refer to phenomenon”，where不可以指代phenomenon这没有错，只是where在这里可以与in which替换吗？如果可以那么这里，即使where不可以指代phenomenon,能算是错误吗？
2）本题解释的开场白中：The clause defining phenomenon is clear (in which changes in the ocean and atmosphere combine), but the subsequent phrase, allowing … is not. If the participial phrase were to modify the previous clause, a comma would have to be inserted between combine and allowing. 小弟想问一下，如果使用“allowing”需要加逗号，此时allowing 在句中做什么修饰成分呢？是伴随结果状语吗？

说一下个人的快速解法哈。通过挑出句子主干可以排除A、B、C。
然后根据网络课堂的语法里说到in which优先于where，印象中是对限定的对象更为准确。可以排除E、
不过真正的语法功夫的话，我还真不在行。帮楼主顶一下。同求大牛解释

1）对于选项E，OG解释中有一条是“Where cannot correctly refer to phenomenon”，where不可以指代phenomenon这没有错，只是where在这里可以与in which替换吗？如果可以那么这里，即使where不可以指代phenomenon,能算是错误吗？
 今天才看的Manhattan，where指的是具体的地点，但是像这题的这种抽象地点，必须用in which。所以where不可以与in which 替换的。
2）小弟想问一下，如果使用“allowing”需要加逗号，此时allowing 在句中做什么修饰成分呢？是伴随结果状语吗？
还请NN多提携呀...谢谢
 我不知道是什么修饰成分，但现在分词在这里应该是修饰前面的句子，而且要用逗号分开，忘了在什么资料看到的了。等NN解释吧。

首先, in which不一定修饰的对象是地点的含义. 比如这里的含义是"在这个现象中", 而不是"在xx里面". 所以where不能取代in which.

其次, 如果修饰的是地点, where可以取代in which, 但是in which描述肯定更加精确. 有很明确的"里面"的含义. 所以GMAT里面介词+which一般都优于where.

Allowing是现在分词作伴随结果状语. 但是, 这里用to allow更加好.

D选项是“ is a phenomenon in which changes in the ocean and atmosphere combine to allow the warm water that has accumulated” 在其中，combine用了一般现在时，而accumulate这个动作在combine之前，所以用现在完成时表示动作发生在过去，并且其影响延续到现在。
小弟是这么想的，NN有更好的方法，求拍砖共享~

这句话的主干提取出来应该是：
EN,同位语,is a phenomenon (in which changes combine) to allow the warm water (that has accumulated) to flow back to the east.
1、    where or in which。
在GMAT里面 介词+which 优于where。其次，大家别把这个看成一个地方，把厄尔尼诺就看成一个现象，在这个抽象的现象里有啥，where只能只具体地点，这样想就不混了。
2、    to allow
如果allowing这种分词作结果状语的话，要comma与主句隔开，但是的这里的主句是”EN是一个现象”,这个也不能带来warm water to flow back的目的，所以A即使加上is也不对。其实把主干提取出来，将to allow后面理解是changes combine的一个目的会比较好，不定式表目的。
3、    has accumulated。
理解语义之后发现the warm water的accumulate是发生在changes combine这个动作之前的，并且已经完成，所以用现在完成时。

一点理解~我觉得这道题还是蛮考语义的~

同意楼上！而且个人觉得E选项的这个are combining的进行时用的也有问题，
所以综合起来当然是D选项比较合理了~
