Obviously, your support is not solid. Just based on the difference between two people. Don't mention whether you judgment of these two people right or not.  Let's have a quick look at the process of paper being published first. For every journal, there are more than one editor. And the editors take turns. So no matter Ray Ball, or Ross Watts, no one can decide the quality of one journal. they can affect the quality of journal. But keep this in mind, one journal have many editors. The second, for one paper to be published on either TAR or JAE, the decision is not made by the editor. Editor just act as one coordinator for reviewer. Now many professor work as the reviewer for these top three journal. To my knowledge, all of my three prior professor worked as the reviewer for these three journals. Usually, every paper will be reviewed by about three reviewer. If reviewer say yes to a paper, then the editor will pass this info to author.
My argument that TAR is superior to JAE is based on the all the research school how to classify these three journals, the papers i have read from TAR, and how hard to get papers published on TAR compared with to hit on JAE. If talk to more professors at your school, and ask what they think about TAR or JAE. You will have a better idea. To my knowledge, many papers published on TAR developed some new research area or built up the base to extend new research. For JAE, there are very good papers, but there are not very classical papers. In addition. it will be easier to get a paper published on JAR than to be published on TAR. When your professor has one paper, just ask him what his target is ? or your own paper.

All in all, that is just my opinion.

Not true. JAR is superior compared to AR and JAE. JAE now becomes more and more biased. Ray Ball is much more open-minded than Ross Watts. You need open-minded people that will facilitate discussion from both sides to improve the quality of the paper.

TAR, JAR, JAE are top journal. Generally, TAR is supreme to JAR and JAE.

Editor act as a coordinator only in theory. Editors, especially chief editors can affect what kind of papers are published in the whole journal because they have the degree of freedom of which referee to choose to review. If the editor does not like your paper, the editor can choose a very mean referee and the prospect of your paper getting accepted may not be that optimistic.

In theory, for any papers to be published, you need to get something new. In practice, For most people in this profession I know, the first choice is JAR and JAE. If they get rejected, then they would send it to AR. If you read enough accounting papers, you will have a sense where all those classical papers are published. Ball and Brown is in JAR, Basu is in JAE, Sloan paper get rejected a lot of times in JAR as well as JAE and that's why his paper eventually landed at AR.

So I think MY OPINION CANNOT BE ANY BETTER.

well, JAE and JAR are definitely MUCH better than TAR. In terms of whether JAE is better than JAR, or vice versa, people may have different opinions. Different editors have different preferences, that happens in each journal in any field. But I think bias is not caused by preferences but by different criteria for papers published by different people.

Can you let us know which top 20 school considers TAR better than JAE and JAR? That is totally insane.

people who can not publish in JAE and JAR can only target TAR, that happens to most grass roots.

or your own paper.
