hi, i am not an american but i've been working for non-profit in china for over 4 year now. and i should say there are quite a lot of job opportunities in china even right now that could use some mpa trainings and this industry here is desperately in need of qualified professionals. wagner is the graduate school of public service in nyu. i believe lz is going to stern. maybe i could go to the same university with him and our south park headquarter in nyc's gonna kick some nuts! lol
wagner should be Wagner College, a NY based college, if I am not mistaken... And nice location

I'm afraid it does not make much sense for a Chinese to get an MPA in US, if he or she wants to return to China. Is LZ American Chinese?

A bit ashamed... What came to my mind was just about government related jobs...
Yes, non-profit is a cause that needs genuine passion and commitment. I think both are great schools; however, Columbia University as a whole enjoys better reputation and will help you leverage more resources, thus bringing edges for your future career.  Just my 2 cents.

thecow10000怎么看学校分pool 的方法呢?是按passport? 还是按location 呢?现在大家的背景都挺diversified, 分pool的方法越来越模糊了。

By default, I think they still use passport.  Then look at experience.  Americans with international experience is good.  Foreigners with international experience (a Chinese working for Johnson & Johnson in Shanghai or a Chinese working for Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong) is good.  a Chinese national with a H-working Visa working for Morgan Stanley is also good because this person has well-known/top working experience and has less Visa risk.

It depends. I've gotten various different answers from different schools. Some schools differentiate based on nationality or residency or college alma mater location. For people with green cards, it's usually your alma mater location that decides which pool you are in. For example, I have an R.O.C. passport, green card, and bachelors degree from Taiwan:

1) at Haas, I'm considered international since my undergrad is in Taiwan
2) at McCombs, I'm considered local since my permanent residency is in the U.S.
3) at INSEAD, I'm considered Taiwanese despite my U.S. residence status

You really have to check with each school's admissions office to figure it out.
