dear airsbj,

Since the school does not have a campus, does everybody just leave after class? how can students in Stern get together and get to know each in depth? how supportive is the school career center? the students and the alumni?

There are corporate events on campus, mentoring and coaching sessions given by the career development office and second year MBAs throughout the entire first semester. You will most likely find yourself in those events after class every day.

There are 6 blocks of 60-70 students each and you will take most of your first semester's classes with them, you will also be assigned a study group of 5 or 6 students or form your own group. There is a two week pre-term before the first semester begins where you network and get to know the 400 students in your class through organized activities. Student groups are also a good way to meet people sharing professional or other interests. Every Thursday evening many students will go to BeerBlast in the basement of the building.

There are many meeting rooms and common areas in the building for group activities, bars and restaurants for student gatherings. It all depends on yourself to mingle and reach out to people and get to know the students around you. We are all adults and we don't need a "gated campus" to keep the students inside to know each other right?

Even though the curriculum and recruiting is a competitive process, students are very supportive and willing to share informations. Again it's up to you to reach out to people and you will be pleasantly surprised how helpful the students are.

The career development office is very strong at Stern. They have established deep relationships with recruiters and provide counseling to students, conduct resume reviews and mock interviews...

I think it's a great community. You will probably not find much time not with the students.

They probably haven't made their decision on your application yet. You should hear from them by Feb 15 and there is still chance to be invited.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply.

Do you think it's helpful to write to the school about the recent accomplishments that i made in work?

Unless it is a significant progress in your career you don't need to update the admissions committee. If you do, make sure to keep it professional and succinct.

Thanks so much for sharing with us the info!

I have an engineering background and is currently working in DC area. Stern is one of my dream B-school. It's really exciting to know that Stern is looking for more diversified background for perspective MBA students. But I'm still a little concerned if I emphasized too much about general management for example as my interest which might not match perfectly with Stern's specialty, it will put myself in a disadvantage situation.

Guess my question is, how do I show my diversified background while appealing to what Stern is looking for?

Thanks again for your kind reply!

melody304: Stern does not look for certain applicants profiles. If general management is your interest you should convey that in your essay. The key is to narrow the scope down to specific functional areas, which you could pursue in the short-term (summer internship and post-MBA), and explain why you are interested in doing this, what effort you have made to develop skills required for the transition, and how you will use resources available at Stern in your job search.

Stern has strong alumni base and corporate relationships for general management positions. There are many Stern students who have received summer or full-time offers from leading consulting firms, strategy/business development positions, and management rotational programs in corporations.

Since you live in DC, you should participate in some events hosted by the admissions office to learn more about the program, general management specialization and meet some students.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply, and valuable input. Talking to MBA students will be a great idea, I will look for their DC event and maybe visit Stern some time soon. You definitely have a good point, I need to think through what I really want to do and how the program can help me reach my goal. Many thanks!
