1.Schools typically ask thisquestion to learn two things. First, they want to learn how much you valuetheir school relative to others you might be considering. And second, they wantto understand how much you value an MBA.
Start by showing what you needin order to meet your goals. For example, perhaps you are an experienced salesrepresentative who wishes to move into general management. Despite yourknowledge of sales, you do not know much about accounting, finance, strategy, organizational development, or the international aspects of business; you maybe looking to acquire substantial skills in these areas. Depending upon thekind of company, and industry, you are aiming for, some of these areas arelikely to be much more important than others. Thus your pitch might be: My goal: work for my currentfirm, but in general management What I am lacking: generalmanagement skills, especially in finance, marketing, and strategy Then show how school X will beright for you. You do this by showing how it meets your requirements. If youwant to become a consumer marketer, note that school X has a host of relevantcourses. What besides course offerings might be important to you? You mightchoose on the basis of the languages used at the school, the nature of the studentbody (age, functional backgrounds, etc.), the reputation of a specificdepartment—and thus the quality and number of companies looking to recruit, say, consumer marketers from the school. Refer to our earlier discussion abouthow to choose a school. Apply these factors to theother schools you are considering. Note that each school will be acceptable interms of meeting the bulk of what you are looking for, but note also thatschool X is more desirable insofar as it offers more consumer marketing coursesor whatever. It is unlikely that any one school will be the most desirable onall counts, which gives you the opportunity to say good things about eachschool in terms of how it meets your needs. Your conclusion, however, shouldemphasize the factors that favor school X, thereby putting it at the top ofyour list. |
