首先,"主谓之间不能加逗号(即主语，谓语),除非有插入成分(即主语，插入语,谓语)'".
此外,逗号和连接词同时连接:句子1,and 句子2或 句子1, 句子2 ,and句子3, 但是必须是句子. (摘自白勇语法)
回到这道题来看:如果用D项, 就成了: According to ……, it was more than likely begun from ……, and only later merged …….。就成了一个句子： it 做主语，谓语为was和merged，中间没有插入成分的情况下，不能加逗号。
这是我个人的理解，希望大家纠正。
