Please commend

The author contends that working at home is financial unwise for people who quit their stable jobs. To substantiate the contention the author enumerates some shortcomings of working at home such as much distractions at home and get isolated from outside. While the argument seems somewhat convincing, a closer scrutiny reveals that the argument is based on some dubious assumptions and the line of reasoning is flawed. The major flaws of the argument will be discussed in the following.

To begin with, the author unfairly assumes that the income of people working at home would be adversely affected due to distractions at home. The author takes for granted that distractions at home will decrease working efficiency and productivity. However, this reasoning is premature unless other causal possibilities is considered and ruled out. As well known, tight deadlines, fierce competition and disagreements from supervisors continues bring pressure white collars, and in turn high pressure depresses mood and decrease productivity. Familiar environment at home tends to ease pressure and relax people. Therefore, working at home may bring much more productivity and hence more fortune.

Secondly, the author makes a tenuous assumption that people working at home tend to procrastinate and lose control over the pace of their work. The author overstates the comparative importance of discipline formal work may bring, and neglects the advantages working at home may bring. One negative effect of discipline in formal work is that the creativity and initiative sometimes get depressed because there are formal procedures needs to follow. Therefore, some changes to the procedure needs be thoroughly investigated before passed and implemented. In sharp contrast, since the person home-working have great freedom on what to do and when to do according to his own schedule, some time may be wasted on review and waiting has been saved and instead spend in some more productive way.

Last but not the least, the author unjustifiably assumes that working at home is isolated and therefore decreases the financial income to a person. The author obviously neglects advanced technology has bring huge change to communication between people. With the advancement of personal computers and internet, a person could chat or send email to another one in every corner of the world in a real-time way. Let use eBay as an example. Via the eBay website, people could upload pictures of their used products and exchange or even sell them to other ones. Some smart person takes the advantage of this opportunity and even build their own online shops.

In sum, the argument is invalid and unpersuasive. The author only cites disadvantages of working at home and neglects its advantages. To solidify the argument, the author should consider all possible outcomes of working at home and rule out other alternatives. Only with more convincing evidence, could the argument be more than just an emotional appeal.
