＃２：the onset of ice ages, 名词

＃３：splitting apart continents 80 million years ago, 动名词（doing +n)
and
＃４：great volcanic eruptions.名词

动名词与名词是不可以平行的，所以#3要找一个名词代替。如果某动词没有直接对应的名词，就用动词的ING形式，就是你现在看到的the splitting

以下是我的拙见哈...

因为如果splitting aprt 是作为continents的形容词，那么这个短语还是强调continents，也就是小行星和彗星会形成大陆...

而正确答案的重心是小行星和彗星会形成大陆的分裂~
