I'm curious about this year's admits vs. # of applicants. Applications have gone from 170 to 200 from first year to second year.

The other thing is the placement record, do you guys know the 2009 class full-time placement? The website only shows the internship statistics w/o salary information.

the admission rate of this program is kinds of low... and most students have 4-year around working experience..
during the phone interview... the director told me that the formal placement will be published about half a month later.. currently.. it is about 88%.

The tuition of this program is $5W. you can take loan but no scholarship... typically..graduates can get 9W-10W at the first year.

My sense is the admission rate is about 30-40%, probably closed to 40%. e.g. assumes 200 applicants last year, they probably admitted 60-80 students, with 40 attended. Similar to Berkeley in some way, but the pool of applicants for Berkeley should be better overall.

Berkeley placements info is out, very strong, so I'm curious to find out the UCLA placement since it seems a lot of graduate stays in the west cost on the buy-side.

ps. Besides, you can analyze the student profiles, comparing UCLA/Berkeley/Princeton etc. although I believe UCLA probably sits at the 10th spot in terms of ranking in MFE.

Btw, are you guys going to UCLA for sure?

You can seach "UCLA FINANCIAL ENGINEERING" at linkedin, then it will give you some info about the placement of first batch student. The best I saw went to CITI, Credit Suisse and Nomura, then some buy side at west coast and  prop shop at Chicago, or back to HK.

Considering it's the first batch and 2009 is a tough year, not bad for a new program.

For ranking, I think Cornell, Chicago, Columbia and UCLA at the same level, maybe Cornell a little bit better.

Have you been admitted to UCLA?

To irisyeah:
i thought ur algorithm for calculating admission rate is reasonable... actually.. the ad rate of Berkeley is also about 30% last year... the fundamental reason of this phenomenon is that they start programs at a terrible time, which sharply cut down the number of applicants.

To zxyaa:
UCLA is a good choice... i thought u will not be regret there... the bg of ppl there is attractive and u can definitely learn a lot of things there.

the curriculum and faculty of UCLA is good... and after comparing the program of Berkeley with UCLA, u will find some insights... :
1. UCLA requires 52 units course study and UCB requires only 28 units... what's more, UCLA's requires a final thesis...from this aspect, if u r intended to study in Finance PhD or reserve a back door for ur future, UCLA may help u more.
2. to be continued, from the application process.. we can find what each program wants.. UCB typically requires 2 round interviews and 1 of them may be face-2-face if possible ( i am preparing for this one ).. but UCLA just asks for only 1 comprehensive and general interview... so UCB admits students totally based on whether u r basically qualified to be successful in job market...UCLA is not going to such a extend... even though from the calender UCLA sent me.. I can feel the "push" from the career service office.. but i guessed this will not be as much as UCB's
3. About faculty... I thought UCLA's faculty is fantastic.. especially after Longstaff (the designer of Longstaff-Schwaz model ) came back to UCLA.. of course.. Schwaz is also in UCLA.. so u can learn a lot from those top teachers.. and UCLA invites some Stanford professors to teach some courses... it is really cool... and from the alumni of these 2 programs, u can know the teaching of UCLA is better.. and the accessibility of UCLA's faculty is better... I do not say UCB is bad.. but for teaching part.. it asks students spending very few time in classroom so I just had some concerns of it.... and UCB's career service is somewhat better than UCLA's

Besides.. from my own experiences in the US.. the brand name of UCLA and UCB is almost the same.. so there is nothing to worry about this.. if u have some preferences about campus.. i can tell u UCLA is newer than UCB... and UCB's climate may be more comfortable....
