Be derived from 是 derive from 的被动语态，但相信楼主想问的是，有些情況出現兩者皆可用的情況。
　其实这些情況于現代英语时有出現。一些原是及物动词宾语的，本应作为文法主语时，用同一动词时，应是原动词的被动语态。偏是句子写出來，卻是同一动词的主动语。事实是，该动词是給其另一相近，是非及物的解释所替代。原理很简单，在行文时，英语以主动语为优胜，所以有此情況出現。
　舉一例子：你改进了你的英语，
You have improved your English.
但很多时卻会以 英语 作为主语，但若直接以被动语态表达
Your English has been improved，
令人觉得生硬，說成
Your English has improved，你的英语进步了
较好。
