Even though (the direct costs of malpractice disputes) amounted to (less than one percent of the $541 billion the nation spent on health car) last year, doctors say fear of lawsuits plays a major role in health-care inflation. 见上句子结构，disputes 这里是名词。amounted to 是谓语动词。amount to 与 a sum 语义重复。lower 是长度概念：比…矮；比…短；less 是数量概念：比…少。 P.S. 刚刚发现OG还有一条解释很重要：lower 是形容词，不可以做介词 to 的宾语。而less 这里是名词词性，可以做介词的宾语。

LOWER 也可以认为比.....低呀,好象说成本低也没有错呀

我觉得你这个解释不对呀,这个句子主干是 The costs(of malpracice disputes)amounted to

不应该是low dispute,而是low costs或LESS COSTS

嗯，我也觉得这个解释说不通。主干the costs 应该是可以被low修饰的，我们平时不都说the cost is low或者the cost is high嘛？

我的一点小感觉.. OG的意思是说主要有了 amount to 所以不能直接跟lower因为它是 adj...当然用a lower sum似乎可以,只是有重复的意思在里面不是最佳..

要是没有amount to 的话...换成..the direct costs of malprcitces...are less than 1 percent of the $541 billion....和 are lower than 1 percent of the $541 billion...感觉上都差不多。.

不过我还是觉得less than 好, 因为 lower, higher讲的是高低...是比较模糊和宽泛的感念.. 当后面是具体的数字 $541 billion的时候...感觉还是用less 比较好..

不知道小弟说的对不对,请大牛指教!

我覺得有兩點是需要注意的

第一點: 雖然less接不可屬名辭 但是對於錢 或是人為單位 都要用less

ex: less than three miles //less than three days

第二點 我覺得是這一題選C而不是D的重點

就是amounted to N. 而此N=less than one percent of 541 billion.因為less是可以當名詞的

但是如果用lower那lower than one percent of 541 billion.就變成形容詞了 所以錯誤

大家討論討論

我觉得好像这个解释最说得通了

弱弱地问一句：基于以上的讨论，是否可以理解为amount to (“总计”）是表示数量，所以用less而不是lower呢？less或lower 和amount 用法有什么限定关系么？

如果这里是因为less是n.而选择它，那less这个名词后面跟than 合适吗？

其实我觉得less than one percent整个做amount的宾语很合适啊，排除lower而选择less是由于意思的差别，就象LES解释的一样
