原句正确，here are my confusion:

1.原句用had feared过去完成式，主句是一般式，怎么是正确选项呢？

2. B的解释是"what" cannot replace "that", 但是下面的第59题，却用了what, 为什么呢？

3. D的解释"The recession" must be followed by "that" 但是下面引用的第5题就省略了that.. Very confused!!!望赐教！

答案是E, 省略了that..

关于59题，其实what引导的从句完全可以看做一个名词。in what ... 就完全是一个in + noun了。我们说in China，不是也是用in嘛。what are now temperate area是因为那地方过去并没有“名字”，所以用了what。

1。had feraed这个是肯定要用一般过去式或者是过去完成式，因为股票市场的gains是发生在人们fear 之后的，有很明显的时间先后关系。
2。你第一道题的that是引导宾语从句，宾语从句中的that 不能省略，你说的59题用what，what和that最大的区别在于,what前你用了介词in的，但是that前不能用介词。
3。recession must followed by that 也是我上面说的宾语从句问题，而第5题，你看后面划线的那一部分都是作为定语修饰market sales，而定语从句的that就可以省略

1. 过去式，我觉得是对的，但过去完成式不是过去的过去吗？在这里好像不适合阿？
3. 我怎么觉得第一个句子的划线部分也是在作为定语修饰recession呢，“人们之前担心的经济衰退”。。。

第一个问题也曾经纠结过我很久，因为新东方老师的“过去完成时不能单独存在”这条原则在我的脑海里根深蒂固。但是后来发现XDF的很多原则都不再在G中适用了

其实，我觉得吧，这里用过去完成是为了强调feared这个动作在过去持续发生了一段时间，这个作用是一般过去时代替不了的
