Kelley or Simon?? urgent!

Dear all,

Please help me choose schools. For finance concentraction, Kelley or Simon, which is one is better

My own considerations and researches:

1.Overall Rank

Kelley has a better rank, employment rate, and starting salary (but the latter two maybe only apply to domestic students)

2. Finance Rank

Simon has better finance rank (of course both two schools have good reputation in finance, but usnews seems rank simon higher )

3. Location:

Kelley is locate in midwest, and is very far away from big cities, but there is only one hour fly between NY City and Rochester. So studying in Simon may have a closer relationship with IB in NY.

4. Money:

Simon gave me 30% scholarship (about us 10,000 each year) Kelley: not yet receive any financial aid info

5.Prospect:                                                                                                               Simon had a new dean last year, and I heared that he seems to be more active and has worked hard to improve Simon image, to outreach alumni networks, and to help students in job searching. And all the Career Service staff were replaced last year.

I don't know Kelley's situation, but I'll try to contact some current students

After considering so many aspect, I still cannot make up my mind! Could anybody please give some suggestions! Thanks to all

Hi,

If you consider only for the finance concentration, personally I will suggest you go to Simon.

The reason is very simple.

Besides the Univeristy of Chicago, there isn't another B-school more strongly committed to the price-theory approach than Simon.Combine that with a brilliant and dedicate faulty, the intimacy of a relatively small program, a strong international student contingent, a well integrated and highly team-oriented curriculum, and state-of-the-art facilities, and you can understand why Simon the man might be smiling.

Good luck!

Just passed by and give my two cents. About the location, Rochester is like a small city in northeast China. It's far from New York City. Actually, New Jersey gets more benefits from the big apple, not the State of New York. Don't be cheated by the words that it's located in New York! Even Cornell complains about their bad location. You can get your conclustion from that easily. IU is in the middle of Indiana, a boring town too. It's about 2-3 hours drive to Chicago.

Totally all, the program at Kelley is stronger than that at Simon. And it's much more respected in MBA education in U.S,, About Finance, Kelley is good too. Maybe literally,  it's not so good in Finance as Simon, but I almost never heard of Simon in our Finance classes except that someone told me it publishes a famous finance academic journal. But you don't want to get into PH.D, right?

Additionally, MBA is an education in all around management tranings, not just in one area. You need a concentration, Finance or Marketing whatever. But what you need to prepare yourself for your future development are far beyond that. When you step into management, you would realize the importance of other skills and knowledge, not just those hard skills. Those are what a well rounded MBA education can give you. You should consider what could a program offer to you and how could they make you a stronger and well rounded manager. Not just strength in Finance or those s* rankings!

the above two are both right, i think.

so, the most important thing i want to add is there might be some other factors helpful for your decision. for example, (1)the industry you want to join, the company you hope to work, (you can compare these two schools from the information on their website. (2) money. any scholarship? simon is expensive but more generous on finance aid.

personally, i think what i said is more practical than ranking for our chinese.

i agree. the so-called strength in finance, especially research oriented, means little for an MBA who only took several finance courses. what matters is your career ambition.

fyi, i have just turned down Simon's offer of 80% tuition scholarship, you might have a try if you decide to go.

Is it true? The current chinese students told me 40% is the highest scholarship for international students. How did you get 80%? could you share us your background and scores?   thanks a lot!

hi

I am a International applicant.. so will not be coming for march weekend ... as it will be very costly moreover getting a visa for that will be major issue... which is your first choice simon or kelly. I applied to Kelly on 21 Nov i.e. in Round 1.

I have applied to number of other schools including duke, cornell, NYU, Michigan Business School.... i have a GMAT of 740, and have been woring with one of the Big 4 Accounting Firm in India but just have a 1 year post qualification experience.... what prospects do you think i have in these schools.

Bye

Its Kelley and not "kelly".

You might be attending this school - u need to get the spelling correct.

BTW I have applied to Kelley R3, but have to still hear from them

Applied to both, in at both with more money from Simon than Kelley.  However, Simon is 2x as expensive so Kelley is cheaper.  As of right now, Simon is ahead of Kelley for me personally.  I am going to both admitted weekends and that will certainly make my decision for me.  I must say that I visited IU last summer and was impressed with the b-school but the community is very depressing.  Both places are relatively inexpensive to live.  I think if you want to work in the midwest IU would be better, Simon is better for the Northeast.  I also believe Simon's overall finance program is better than Kelley's.  Just opinions though.  Congrats on the admits btw.

i pretty much feel the same way....although i applied rd. 2 and havent heard back yet from IU so maybe i wont have to make the decision.... im only interested in finance and believe IU is only ranked higher because they have better all around program. I believe NYU's program suffers in the same way... dominant finance program takes away from the rest of the school. IU does place alot of students at companies i'd like to work for post-grad. jpm, boa. merryll, etc....hopefully i hear back from IU soon....also waiting for NYU...not looking good though....

Agree, Kelley is stronger from all perspectives. Simon is a good school but just not as good as Kelley. Kelley is a long standing strong name with a solid finance program. Compare with UI, U Of R is famous in Econ, not business. In terms of location, either one is considered to be in the middle of no where.

Well, if add $ weight, it maybe another senario because in bad economy, many chinese students have to go back asia for their jobs. $20K is a difference. I thought you should think very carefully about your won strenghts. Are you really competitive in finding a job? If that is the case, I would say go to Kelley, then you have better chance to get a star company, though competition is huge. If not, why not take that money and go to simon, even you cannot land a good job in the states, there won't huge financial burden and only think it is a purely education expereince, or even a long vacation.
