打算读finance PHD, 希望这里的CDer给点建议和意见

谢谢，你的意见很中肯，我因为刚有这个计划，也还不清楚自己到底在这个圈子里处于什么位置。看到srlinco的回复后，我打算还是先考下GMAT，然后有必要重新定位自己。

Like sofa, diversify ur portfolio, don't aim too high. Gmat is only part of consideration, not all. at least above 720
2. OG is official guide of GMAT.  cr,sc,rc is Critical reasoning, sentence correction, reading comprehension, which are 3 parts of GMAT in Verbal part.

我还有一个concern，其实就是对于我们拿到了一个PHD, 再去读另一个PHD，那么他们会不会用我们第一个PHD期间的表现来衡量我们potential的academic的能力呢？也就是说这个PHD的经历反而是negative的

但是根据我的经验，我希望能够给你提供一个比较做参考。我的背景：北青师人中的一所的统计本科毕业。UBS北京4年资产管理部基金经理工作经验。美国80左右统计phd，GPA 4.0，毕业后留校做Lecturer教过两门研究生和两门本科生课； GRE2300，GMAT差一点：680；选修过5门经济学核心课Average GPA:4.0, 和finance prof合作写过2篇projects. 4封推荐信包括一封economics Prof and 一封finance Prof(Penn state毕业).  2009年申请15所前40的finance phd programs结果全军覆没，只拿到Olin的面试。今年申请45所学校。10所前40.但是只拿到了50-100名左右的几个学校的offer. 可以想象转专业的困难程度是多么大。另外如果你想进industry， CFA的作用比较大一些，但是如果你想做faculty, 还应该在academic上好好增强一些。而且GMAT至少在720以上。但是万事皆有可为，尽自己最大的努力就好，剩下的就要靠一点点运气了。

他做过的research project蛮多的，也有independent publication在亚洲的journal。

不过部分原因是那时申请要容易一些。

gmat is not important after first round,  if you have some TA experience, of course you have during phd.
statistics is good, but those who apply all have good math skills,  and even some math majors are just so-so.
You will be competitive if having some publications, since you already got a PHD degree then?

Last, take some finance phd courses and get good RLs,   which is the major cause  those big guys will have patience to read your profile...

我说一下我的想法：

1 你国内的学校非清华北大复旦，将来申请时那些系里的中国人未必对你感兴趣；你的美国学校不是很好，很难申请到档次高于它的学校，除非你难拿到金融业界大牛的推荐信。我觉得商学院申请人太多，申请学校时向上行很难。

2 统计的博士对于金融的申请有益，但你的研究背景是生物统计，对于金融的申请只能证明统计背景和科研能力，这样的申请人会很多。真的。

3 我研究了近几年的申请，觉得那些top项目更倾向于那些背景简单的小孩子，那些学校就像优雅高贵的绅士，有闲庭漫步的本钱，不需要靠学生出论文，他们更看重潜力。反倒是那些50-100名的项目喜欢背景复杂的一些人。

4 前两年的申请情况没有多大参考价值。去年的竞争和今年的都没有可比性。

5 转专业本身就是一个负面信息。

所以转以前一定要想清楚，目的要明确。你可接受学校的底线是什么样的。将来能不能接受去teaching school 教书。

实话实说，我觉得前15名你没戏，与GMAT成绩关系不大。看看能不能弄到金融大牛的强力推荐？

U r qualified, show them ur stats research experiences,since u r a stat guy, u def have a much deeper undstranding of all discrete and cotinuous theories than regular applicants, and its gona be a huge advantage, if the math and computer guys can not survive in application of finance phd, no one else can.

the guy in our department graduate with phd in stats this year and he entered mit for another phd in finance( though he had an AP offer from cornell) another regular case is my friend who did a phd from tsinghua get in our phd program( one of top 10 for sure)

谢谢，目前我还没有毕业，估计明年毕业吧。最近会有几篇paper，不过基本都是生物的，我做的分析，所以也不会是一作，一作的paper估计要到下半年或者明年了。TA的experience是有的，比如time series 还有regression，也算是经济金融会用的到的统计方法。我正在修一些quantitative finance的课，我们学校的金融很弱，是理工类学校，所以take fiance的课估计不行，经济的课可能还可以，我要去打听打听，我们这边跨系选课的话，每个系的policy不一样。
