刚刚看到一条这样的解释，对于第二句感觉没有问题，可是第一句用the number of后面+fewer对吗？

是这样，prep185中的选项存在fewer和less的比较
在下面有人的解释就是这样：
the number of A is greater/fewer than the number of B.
the amount of A is more/less than the amount of B.

正确的是（来自gmatpill，By Zeke Lee ）：

The 3 Rules for MORE/GREATER/LESS/FEWER than…
1) If COUNTABLE (dogs, apartments, opportunities, agencies, people)

-> then Use MORE/FEWER than combination

2) If COUNTABLE, but related to time, distance, or money OR if NOT-COUNTABLE

-> then Use MORE/LESS than combination

3) For BOTH COUNTABLE & NOT-COUNTABLE, if there is a comparison made between the LEVEL or DEGREE or NUMBER of something

-> then Use GREATER THAN/LESS THAN combination

So in summary, there are only 3 possible combinations:
1) MORE/FEWER than
2) MORE/LESS than
3) GREATER/LESS than
