What's wrong with UT Austin?

UT Austin is doomed this year on the new US News ranking. Slided to 23rd while A & M and UIUC are jumping so fast. What's wrong with UT?

I hate to post it twice.

I have no idea why Texas A&M jumps up so quickly. I will not even recommend people to apply the bschool in Texas A&M despite its  strength in other fields. In my opinion, only UT Austin, SMU and Rice have decent MBA programs in Texas. Also, where does the University of Minnisota come from?... there should be something wrong.

Although the job placement has not been very encouraging in these two years(however, all the top schools have been in the same boat), I don't see any other reasons for UT Austin to slip out of top 20.

Anyway, the school has promised us to return to Top 20 next year. So it's a critical point to the school's management.

if you think MBA ranking is ridiculous, go check out USNEWS law school ranking. This has been the biggest topic online recently. Rumor has it that USNEWS will re-do their formula in the coming year.

If let me choose,

1. UT Austin: 老牌,在TEXAS的地位无人能撼. 优惠的州内学费, 一流的师资, 几乎将TEXAS的一流人才一网打尽. 我以前说了很多了,这里就不多说了.

2. SMU or Rice(depends on where you live or where you prefer to stay, Dallas or Houston):两个学校很相似, 都是老牌私立学校,UNDERGRADUATE很强---尤其RICE, 属于UNDERGRADUATE中TOP 10的ELITE SCHOOL; 而SMU, 是第一夫人和宋美龄的母校.两家学校校园风光和MM都很漂亮. 大家不要小看UNDERGRADUATE的排名,他们的ALUMNI NETWORK 往往相当强. SMU和RICE曾经都挤入过TOP30. 这些年也不知怎的,下滑的厉害. 难道是整个TEXAS的就业大气候不行了? 连累的UT AUSTIN几十年TOP20的位置都不保了?哎. 不过, IT WON'T LAST LONG. 我们学校领导现在很紧张, 天天发EMAIL向我们汇报改革计划...WOOPS, 说跑题了. 还说SMU和RICE, 个人认为, 如果学校没给FA的话, 价格偏高. 据我所知, SMU是比较大方的, RICE好象给钱不多.

3. Texas A&M: 虽然在理工科方面很强,比如克隆只羊之类的. 但它的MBA PROGRAM即使是在TEXAS也是比较默默无闻的. 在加上它地处COLLEGE STATION, 前不着村后不着店, 镇里只有WALMART, 一直不被看好. 也许是和UT在其他各项上的竞争太多了(尤其是FOOTBALL, 和UT 简直是死对头), 悄悄地躲在小镇里苦心专营, 在UT最虚弱的关头,冷不防地猛打一棍子, 俨然一副暴发户的样子. 如果单凭今年的排名, 你就以为TAM和UT齐名,那就大错特错了. 但如果TAM能在将来(至少未来5年)保持这个RANKING, 那么就恭喜他们了, 到时候你再考虑吧.

如果SMU 给了80%的fee waiver,你觉得是否值得取读呢？我打算学习finance or marketing。SMU应该是一个地区性的学校，我想他的名气应当是仅局限于德州吧。不知道SMU的毕业生在Dallas 的就业情况如何，你了解么？

我觉得这个DEAL还不错. SMU在DALLAS是最好的学校了,可以想象它在DALLAS 的影响力了.

1. UT Austin is the no.1 school in long horn state, period. I don't care how the ranking goes, your degree is at the top in Texas.

2. Rice is the second, they are the top5 undergraduate program in the country. It's location is one of the best, Houston economy is booming, not to mention that many Investment banks move their backend operation to Houston.

3. Texas A&M, man, they have George Bush's donation and one of the biggest military funding program, it is not surprised that they rank high. Texas A&M is widely recognized in Houston as well, after all, they are 2 hours drive away

4. SMU, It is old and it used to be very famous. but things have gone south since the big Dallas telecom boom busted in 2000. well, the good news is that they are recovering.
