but then是固定搭配等同于on the other hand。没看到官方解释，但是从例句可以看出主语相同时可省略，虽然大多数的情况下后面还是完整的句子，比如：

He promised to attend but then begged off.

按GMAT的原则的话就是因为省略后不会产生任何歧义，所以得出结论是可以省略的。不知道这个够不够有说服力？
