Creating a new festival may seem an unusual way to celebrate history and culture, but we are in fact all creating new festivals every year.

  1. seem+形容词

  Everything seems easy.

  2. seem+名词

  He seemed an honest man.

This seemed to us an ideal plan.

  3. seem+不定式

The maths problem seems to be very difficult to work out.

  I seem to have caught a cold.

  4. seem+

Our teacher seemed stopped by the question.

  His story seemed revealed.

  5. seem+doing

No one seemed thinking that way.

She seemed lacking in enthusiasm when we were talking about that film.

  6. seem+like+n./ V-ing,

It seems like years since I last saw you.

Those cards seemed like so many little flags dotted about the schoolroom.

  7. There seems to be...,意为"似乎有;好像有……"

There seems to be no work for you to do now.

  8. It seems/seemed +that从句

It seems that he is lying.

It seemed that no one knew what happened.

  9. It seems/seemed + as if从句

It seems as if he were in a dream.

It seemed as if the good man were trying to teach us all he knew at this last lesson.

It seems/seemed as if... It seems as if she had read this novel. It seems as if our team is going to win. It seems as if he has learned by heart a speech written by someone else.

It seems like you're catching a cold, Taylor.

Along with the drop in producer prices announced yesterday, the strong retail sales figures released today seem like it is indicative that the economy, although growing slowly, is not nearing a recession.

(A) like it is indicative that

(B) as if to indicate

(C) to indicate that

(D) indicative ofC

(E) like an indication of

Choice C, the best answer, offers a concise and idiomatic grammatical sequence: the main verb seem is followed by an infinitive (to indicate), which is in turn followed by its direct object, a noun clause introduced by the relative pronoun that. In A, seem is followed by like, a preposition improperly used to introduce a clause. Also, it either disagrees in number with figures or lacks an antecedent altogether. In B, as if is introduced awkwardly and (in context) unidiomatically between seem and the infinitive. Also, with that omitted, B is ungrammatical. Choices D and E, with of substituted for that, are likewise ungrammatical: of, a preposition, can introduce a phrase, but not a clause.

For all his professed disdain of such activities
, Auden was an inveterate literary gossip.

(A) For all his professed disdain of such activities

(B) Having always professed disdain for such activities

(C) All such activities were, he professed, disdained, and

(D) Professing that all such activities were disdainedA

(E) In spite of professions of disdaining all such activities

Choice A is correct and idiomatically phrased. Choice B fails to express the sense that Auden indulged in literary gossip despite professing disdain for it. Choices C, D, and E do not establish precisely that Auden was the one professing disdain for literary gossip. The and in C makes the disembodied professions of disdain and the indulgence in gossip seem like wholly separate matters, and E is especially awkward. The question is of middle difficulty.
