Higher is still better even GMAT is not the most important factor. If you check the GMAT for the top schools, the average and median increase year by year.

If he has CFA and FRM and good working experience in industry, it is really not necessary to pursue a PhD unless he is crazy about the research. PhD is totally different from MBA. From his background, I think what is better for him is to apply for a top MBA.

For those top schools, they will face tons of application with 760 and 770 GMAT every year, and it is not even an issue for them, and it is truely irrational to judge a person on a stupid GMAT score. What is the real difference between a 720 and a 760? If you get a low score(especially in Q), then it might signal your weakness and make it a concern for them, but a very good and a perfect GMAT score can not tell them who is a better choice, and this difference only has a marginal effect on your application, of course, it is always better to have a higher score.

I remember the average of GMAT for USC for last year is 750... I am not sure it has only a marginal effect. Even though they claim they don't care much about GMAT, but if they have the choice to pick up the higher one, I believe they will definitely go for that.

现在挺急的了，他没有什么准备，很多学校都截止了，重考来不及，不过以他的能力准备两月GMAT应该能上700

Remember GMAT is standard test which means every one is on the same page, while GPA is not since it is hard to compare among different schools. This is why some schools care more GMAT than GPA.

No top Econ use GRE score anymore after first round screening, but the average GRE score for incoming students is increasing every year. It is highly possible that people got higher and higher score those days, or those small fraction of people who have str LOR or background got a higher score. Your observation can confirm no causal relationship between GMAT and offers.  Besides, I've heard different faculty in different finance department tell me "720 and 750 is the same thing, but no less than 700", I think this is a more convinceing evidence.

Well... Different people have different stories or sayings. By the way, you actually prove my point:   if the average of GMAT increases year by year, that means you need to have higher GMAT to be more competitive. It is not only from school but it also from people who apply for the same program. I did not conclude that Higher GMAT has a casual connection with offer. My point is very simple: higher GMAT means you have a better chance of getting admitted.
