Hi wapianwang,

Thank you so much! I want to know sth about OB/HR program.

From student profiles, I didn't see any Chinese student. Is that true? Do you know how this program select people? What are their preferences?

They require that the SOP should be approximately 350 words. I think It's really hard to distinguish oneself in these limited words. Does that indicate SOP is not as important as other criteria?

Thank you!

Tracy

Tracy,

I am afraid I can offer limited help. If you don't find any Chinese students then there's none. The two first-year students(one boy and one girl) are from Canada and the U.S.

They are fairly young and the boy completed his master's after he is already in the Ph.D program. I don't know much about the SOP of OB/HR. But I think generally the professors want to know 1) what do you want to do after you graduate (obviously there's only one correct answer to this question) 2) why the program is a good fit for your goal (usually they expect to see that you know at least something about the program and professors) 3) what makes you stand out from other applicants. So I guess if you can really find reasons which convince yourself that a certain program is a fit for you, then the professors probably will be convinced too. This is all I know so far.

Good luck!

I also concerns that question plingtingxiao asked. Well. it's hard for students in China to apply for American universities: we do not know who they want and we just guess and thus apply for a number of schools. Some time it really make one feel tired.
Yes, I think it is difficult to apply for PhD programs directly from China. If one or a few alumni from your school have enrolled in the PhD program, it might be better because the professors now have an idea of your school. Are you going to apply for strategy @Purdue in 2010 or you are still weighing different options? PhD programs are quite different from each other mainly because of the professors and tradition/style of the program. What are your research interests?

I have applied for the PhD program in MIS. Before I officially submitted my application, I tried to contact several professors, but only one replied me and told me those words. Hehe, thanks for your message. I've sent you a message via the CD mailbox^_^

I am applying to the PhD program in Operations Management. Could you advise how many students are currently in the program and how many it may admit next fall?

Another question concerns Prof. Dada, M., I cannot find him at the purdue website now.

Many thanks!

I guess there are 7-8 students currently in the program. No applicants were admitted this year. I am not sure about 2010 but I guess they should admit one or two students. You can always ask the professors. If you don't find a particular prof's profile on the website then he/she might have left. Good Luck!

Thank you very much for your answer.

Well, I have nearly decided to apply for Purdue, however, I'm still thingking about it now, because I do not have any work experience.

As you said, every school has its own style. What is the style of Department of SM at Purdue?

You asked a big question. Before I applied, I actually knew little about the program except that one of the professors conduct research similiar to what I described in my SOP and one of the students seemed to have similliar background as mine. Now I think I can share two points with you. First, we do empirical research and emphasize research methods. Second, our program has historical impact on the field. If you are really serious about the program, these two points can serve as helpful hints for you. As for work experience, I think what really matters is whether you can show that you can or at least have the potential to generate ideas. It is possible to waste several years of work experience and gain nothing out of it, right? What's the argument you can make for people without work experience?

Hi Wapianwang,

Could you give me the contact of the current students in Accounting? I'd like to talk with them about study and life there. Thanks

Many thanks for your help. I am applying for MIS program.
I have a question. Do they prefer master background more or research experiences (publications) more?
Thank you.
