PS, I have seen many a good applicant get 'dinged' because they listened to too many different people, and forgot that the person who knows their own story best... was themselves.

Everyone, please just see my posting as a bad joke. Like someone says, it shouldn't really matters, honestly.

Thanks Jason, I read all your posts about Wharton. They help me understand Wharton a lot. And I will listen to myself for the for my own stories.

One of the reason prompted me to write something silly like that is because one of close friends received offers from Wharton and an M7 school. She turned down the Wharton offer because the other school's tuition was much cheaper and the offer came with some scholarship. Several years out of the school, she is feeling the perceptions and the ways how the alumni of these two schools were seen. She told me privately that if she were able to choose again, she would have definitely picked Wharton because the image that comes with her alma mater was "nerdy, lack of communication skills" even though she's a very out-going lady with great interpersonal skills. She suggests me to apply for both despite whatever she says because all these schools are hard to get in, but if I am in the same situation as she was, I'd better choose Wharton.

She would never say anything bad about her school to almost anyone, even her parents don't know that she has this little complaint. She works hard to change this image of her school by representing the school in reception in her city, volunteering as an alumni interviewer. She told me she put much weight on communication skills when interviewing candidates, just an effort to change this relatively weak image of her school.

Perhaps, like what Jason says, I listened too much about what others say and forgot about myself, and I thought too much...that's what led to my childish theory....

"if you get into any top 10 school and land a good job then, you will find that nobody gives a dime on which school you went."

this is very true. I am just talking about M7. Lot of people who mention about M7 are simply those who are fussy about ranking and want to use the term M7 to narrow the gaps betwwen their schools and HWS.

It's just like someone driving a mercedes C230 says: I am driving a mercedes.
thats different from driving an S600. if you are given an S600 or C230 for free, which one will you take? some may say, as long as I can get from point A to point B, I am fine. I don't give a damn about what car I am driving.

but i would rather put S600 in the same class as 760Li, and c230 in the same class as bmw 323.....rather than a simple mercedes or bmw....

I just wanna take a break from the essays, and think/write about sth else for a bit....hehe....the essays writings are so stressful. im writing them again and again after critics from different ppl...

unfortunately i drive a mercedes c230. when people ask about my car, i never mention mercedes, just tell them that i drive a small car, haha.

Terrific! I love your style. Actually mine is pretty similar. I drive the cheapest suv of a luxury car maker, but when others ask about my vehicle, I never mention the car maker, just tell them that i drive an suv.

yes, seriously.
Sorry, Jason. I prefer to keep her school name off the topic because her intention was not to defame her alma mater, but for my benefit in understanding all the b-schools with her experience on the St.

by the way, Jason, can i ask you for some suggestions on the Wharton's essay 1?

the number of words are suggested to be in the 750-1000 range.

I have about 100 words for my short term goal and why. I didn't think it's unique so I didn't write too much about it.
I write 300 words for my two long term goals and why.
The remaining 400 words are all about why Wharton.

Do you find it unbalanced in terms of the numbers of words in these three components? i have two long term goals. are they too many?

serious?

I went to a 'nerdy' undergraduate school where people think we 'can't communicate'. I don't care what others think; that was the best time of my life, and I wouldn't have given up The University of Chicago for anything- not Harvard, not MIT, not Stanford, not any other school. Maybe your friend needs to be a bit stronger and have the courage of her convictions. One trait of a strong leader is that he or she makes his or her own decisions, isn't it?

Which is why, I wouldn't entirely listen to her either. Make your own decisions. BTW, that applies to your goals too. If you think it makes sense to have two goals, go ahead. It's your story, not mine, nor anyone elses's. You can choose how many words to allocate to which section based on what you think is best. Unless you want to paste your essay here for me to read.. even then, though, I probably wouldn't be able to offer much comments, since that would just be one essay, and has to be compared with the other essays, recommendations, and so on.

Good luck!

jason> I tried to PM you this but it was simply to long to fit. I PM'ed you a short msg, maybe your inbox is not working again.

I just want to apologize for my idiotic comments related to Chicago and any other M7 schools. I know that the first thing an MBA student will learn is to respect peer schools. It is a very terrible thing to develop an arrogant attitude about other b-schools, not to mention that I am not even an MBA student.

Actually I am from the "nerdiest" (by public regards) undergraduate school in Canada too, so I do wanna slightly tweak the perception towards me when interviewing for a job by getting an MBA.

It's really funny that a guy who is not even sure if he can get an interview invitation from top 20 b-schools to make fun of the top 10 programs. I will correct my attitude towards all the top programs and go back to work hard on my essays.

BTW, my friend is actually a very strong lady. 20 years ago, she came to the USA as an early teenager without her parents. She’s not from a rich family and always had to work part-time to afford her own living expense. She would love to attend undergraduate program at her alma mater which was her dream school, but she could not afford it and went to a community college instead; then after a couple of years when she had saved some tuition money, she went to a state university to complete her bachelor degree. After several years working on the St, she received a partial scholarship from her employer to support her MBA. She chose her school almost purely based on financial concerns. She's just suggesting me to pick a school that fit me, not to worry about cost factors as the difference in schools could be way more significant than the $20k or 30k I could save.

She's very thankful all everything that her school brought her. Her only complaint is that the small extra effort she has to overcome the image that came along. Her only regret was she made her decision purely on money concerns and thought her school was in the same league as Wharton both being in the M7.

She's very positive about this. Since she would not get a second MBA, she would just work really hard to represent her school and contribute to change the image by recommending candidates with outstanding communication skills. She never talks about this publicly or to anyone. She only shares this with me as a close friend and a mentor who had fought through the process and perceptions.

I have always seen you as my mentor who I had never talked to even if you are younger than I am. I would never have imagined our conversation would start like this. I benefit a lot from your "Wharton" and "Ask Jason" threads as well as every other replies you put on CD.

Terribly sorry again for the arrogance and I really appreciate all your input on CD and the feedback regarding to my Wharton essay 1.

Maxdaddy,

I did not take offense at all to your statement. I just called myself 'M7 student' because that's a fact, no? Wharton's in M7, so I'm an M7 student.

As for 'fit', I agree, find out what 'fits' you best. But just as money is not the sole consideration, so shouldn't the brand name. Unlike you nor your friend, I never 'work hard' (or at all, really) to 'correct' any perceived perception that the University of Chicago is nerdy. Instead I wear shirts that say.. "University of Chicago, Where Fun Comes to Die."

My point is, some things matter to some people, while for some people everything matters. For the latter group, even if they went to a HWS or whatever top school, they will never be happy. There is always something that is telling them that it is not enough. For me, I'm perfectly happy going to a nerdy school, regardless of what people think- because that is PERFECT for me.

Finally, I didn't think you were being arrogant. I was just stating my own opinion that I am a nerd and I loved my nerdy school. Feel free to state yours, I welcome it!
