The answer is A,n the following is the explanation from the Notes.

(A)正确, as a result后面接名词的并列结构,表达正确,简洁
(B) as a result of后面加动名词不好,且根据未划线部分and the clearing判断出as a result of后面应该
是名词
(C) removal是remove的名词形式,因此不用the removing表达remove的名词形式
(D) which不能指代句子,在这里没有指代; removing应该改为the removal
(E) which不能指代句子。

句子结构: The…population has increased… as a result of the removal of… and the clearing of…

I could accept the answer explanation. But I have a question yet:

1、the removal  vs the clearing    

2、why not the removal vs the clearance？

so, I think that there may be some other reason for the C.

Clearing和clearance的意思不一样的。

题目的意思是周围的林地没了，应该用clearing：

clearing=

1. [n]  the act of removing solid particles from a liquid
2. [n]  the act of freeing from suspicion
3. [n]  a tract of land with few or no trees in the middle of a wooded area

 而clearance的意思是：

1. [n]  permission to proceed; "the plane was given clearance to land"
2. [n]  the distance by which one thing clears another; the space between them
3. [n]  vertical space available to allow easy passage under something

我们更熟悉的clearance的意思还有“清仓大甩卖”哈。

C还有一个问题，就是resulting from。我不是很拿得准，但是我觉得resulting from最好是紧挨着一个名字作定语从句，而不是单独出来作状语从句。

如果需要状语从句的话，最好用as a result of..

呵呵，简单说，平行是要追求意思上和用法上的一致，不是追求长得像。
