请问到刘振民语法改错里面一道例题

答案是C。但是看完解释，我还是有问题。答案中说不可以用quantities来修饰可数名词people，但是我baidu了下，有以下解释

amount:
                修饰不可数名词,谓语单复数根据amount来决定  a large amount of +un.+ is  ;large amounts of +un.+are
                做状语：in large amounts 大量的
                解释为“数量” The amount of time is two hours.

deal:      修饰不可数名词，一般只有 a good/great deal of+un.+ is

number:
                        修饰可数名词，谓语动词用复数  a large number of +cn.+are
                            ; large numbers of +cn.
                            +are
              做状语：in large numbers 大量的
                解释为“数量”  the number of sth. is...

quantity: 修饰可数或不可数名词皆可，谓语动词由quantity决定
                    一般： a large quantity + un. +is
                                  large quantities +cn.(pl) +are
                做状语：in large quantities
                解释为“数量”
    

这样看来quantity可以修饰可数名词啊。。。

另外C选项最后为什么出来个themselves呢？great numbers of people were dangerously overextended 作为被动结构已经完整了啊？

同样还有一道刘振民语法里的题要问。题目是这样的：

Affording strategic proximity to the Strait of Gibralter, Morocco was also of interest to the French throughout the first half of the twentieth century because they assumed that if they did not hold it, their grip on Algeria was always insecure.

(A) if they did not hold it, their grip on Algeria was always insecure

(B) without it their grip on Algeria would never be secure

(E) never would their grip on Algeria be secure if they did not hold it

答案是B.我不明白为什么E不行。确实E选项的if thy did not hold it比起B选项的without it太罗嗦了，但是E的语气更强烈，不是似乎更好吗？请高手指教哦
