The extent to which the broadcast media should be censored for offensive languages and behaviors brings conflicts between our rights as individuals to freely express ourselves and the duty of government to protect its citizenry from potential harm. In my point of view, governmental protection from harms of our exposure to crimes, violence and obscenity takes precedence over individual rights to express inappropriate contents.
Admittedly, free speech right, which gives people the power to publicize their opinion and defend their interests, is an important component of human rights in a democratic society. For instance, a housewife may easily appeal to television or radio to debunk a low quality food product and warn community not to buy it anymore if she has access to media and posts her information without time-consuming censorship. Moreover, free expression of mass media plays a significant role in citizenry’s supervision over vital societal issues, such as corruption, scandals and insider trading. Without enough freedom to report critical social topics, mass media might finally become a vocal tool of some vested interest groups, losing the capability of uncovering truth. (正反论证)However, extreme free expression without any constrains will bring harms to the whole society if the information sources are not healthy or seriously biased. Therefore, censorship of government or other organization is necessary to establish for the metal good of the mass. (critical, crucial, significant, important)
First and foremost, mass media has great impact on audience because people exposed to television or radio are inclined to (tended to) mimic the language and behaviors that they have heard and seen. If the media transfers violent, obscene or offensive contents, audience probably will apply what they have learned to daily life. As the result, the proportion of people who are violent or offensive will increase dramatically. We can get to this point from common sense and our experience with children who learn fast from outside living and studying environment.
In the second place, offensive language and behavior, to some extent, damage the harmony and order of society. If more people become violent and offensive, as discussed above, the society, a composition of individuals, will definitely has more conflicts, disharmony and even crimes, and its operating order may be more or less impaired. Hence, costs with public service increase, leading to tax rates enhancement and business complexity and vulnerability.
Last but not least, the fast expansion of television and radio contents makes it urgent to establish such a censorship mechanism. Especially in internet world, everyone can be a source of information. Suppose that television or radio uses these contents without careful scrutiny, the media will easily get biased or prejudiced when discussing many topics.
In sum, media censorship is necessary for government to protect its citizenry from unhealthy language and behavior, and thus to maintain the harmony of society and decrease costs of public service. It is in our best interest to keep people gentle and courteous, far away from violence and offense. Though a democratic society needs free speech right to guarantee human’s right, this right should not be an absolute one. We can never get freedom if we take actions without considering the impact on others. |
