D有什么错误啊？
修饰没有错误，比较对象因为出现了a figure，明确是与前面的数字作比较。
如果是说in 1997有问题，那么表示“在某一时间的数字”用什么样的介词呢？

而且GMAT很喜欢这个结构啊~~~~~

我也把答案限定在a和b了，因为后面用的都是in 1997（这与by 1997有很大的区别）。我觉得是they上面出问题的，they只可能指代前句中的孩子。

1981年的时候用了一般过去式，但是1997年用过去完成时，这个也太莫名其妙了吧
我一开始选题就直接把过去完成时的选项都排除了。。。。悲剧

恩they的指代应该有问题，义务教育总共才12年，1981年时候的children到1997年应该不能算是children了，非同一批人

D的错误是不是compared with的修饰对象不明确呢？需要一个先行词。如chores, a figure compared with ....

另外，a figure of nearly 6 hours a week 对吗？有这种说法吗？

我理解C的错误在于： 6 hours a week were spent in 1997 应该改为 6 hours were spent in a week in 1997, 这样不会有歧义。

请指正。

by 1997，children spent six hours a week doing household chores，here，“six hours” means an average figure during 1981 to 1997
but “in 1997”，that figure means a specific number in that year
