Imperial College Business School 英语成绩问题--本科在国外的同学给点经验吧!

收到Imperial College offer, conditional on 定金、大学学位证明、财力证明、IELTS/TOEFL/GCSE的英文成绩;

English Language Tests for postgraduate studies

To obtain maximum benefit from studies at Imperial College all students must have a good command of the English Language.  College therefore requires applicants to have taken an English Language test and achieved an acceptable grade or score before admission can be confirmed.  The College Senate has approved the tests set out below.  Please note that the scores or grades indicated are the minimum levels generally acceptable to the College.  Departments have the discretion to prescribe higher requirements either for specific courses of study or in specific cases where there are serious doubts as to the abilities of individual students to undertake proposed programmes of study.

Students must make arrangements to take the appropriate test well in advance of the start of their course.   Places will not be confirmed and students will not be allowed to register until confirmation of an acceptable result has been received as set out below. Please note the separate conditions for applicants to all Business School Programmes.

• A first degree taught in English within the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, Guyana, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, West Indies.

• Candidates whose first degree was not taught in English but who have then successfully completed a one-year MSc (or equivalent) course at a UK university.

• A grade of not less than C in English Language in GCSE, IGCSE, GCE ‘O’ Level or equivalent.

• A grade of not less than C in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

• A pass in the University Test of English for Speakers of Other Languages (UETESOL).

• British Council IELTS Test
A score of not less than 6.5 including a score of 5.0 or better in the written and spoken English elements of the academic test.  NB: the requirement for Business School programmes is 7.0 overall, with 6.0 in writing and 6.0 in speaking.

If you are not resident in the UK contact your nearest British Council Office.  If you are resident in the UK, please consult the IELTS website [http://www.ielts.org] for details of where you can take the test.

• TOEFL
A score of not less than 90 overall in the internet-based test (iBT), to include 24 in Writing and 20 in Speaking; or 600 in the paper-based test (PBT), or 250 in the computer-based test (CBT), both to include a minimum score of 4.5 in the written English.
NB: the requirement for Business School programmes in iBT is 98 overall, to include 25 in Writing and 23 in Speaking.

English language requirement for Business School Applicants

All Business School students are required to hold an English language qualification, of a higher standard than the College minimum requirement. Acceptable qualifications include:

  • GCSE English grade C or equivalent
  • IELTS: A minimum score of 7 with a score of 6 or better in the written English and spoken English elements of the academic test.
For details of IELTS test centres, visit the IELTS website.
Alternatively, contact your nearest British Council office if you are not a UK resident.
  • TOEFL: A minimum score of 610 (or 253 in the computer-based test) with a minimum score of 4.5 in written English.  For the internet-based test we require 98 overall, including a minimum of 25 in the written section and 23 in the speaking section. For details of TOEFL test centres, visit the TOEFL website or call: +1 609 921 9000.

Please note that this requirement is equally applicable to Home, EU and Overseas students. It may be possible to waive the Business School higher language requirement element under exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the School. ALL applications MUST meet the College minimum requirement.

Pre-sessional courses in the UK:

It is College policy that candidates who do not meet the requirement above may not register for MSc/MRes/MBA/MPH, since Imperial College Master’s degrees are intensive courses over a 12-month period, and there is no time available to improve language abilities.  However, in cases where a candidate’s performance is judged to be close enough to College requirements that successful attendance at an English language course in the UK prior to the planned study programme would be beneficial, a pre-sessional programme will be recommended. Candidates will be responsible for making their own arrangements, and will need to pass at the required level in order to satisfy the English condition of the Imperial College London offer. Only the pre-sessional courses listed below are acceptable:

Candidates planning to take a pre-sessional course should be aware that they may not secure allocation of College accommodation for their main programme of study until they can present a successful result.

PhD candidates may be permitted to register with a slightly lower score than those stated above.  In addition, all research students who have been asked to present formal evidence of English language ability at entry will be assessed by the College’s English Language Support Unit after initial registration.  This assessment may specify attendance at a variety of internal classes (free of charge), and may also require a further assessment at transfer to PhD.  The College has taken this step in order to ensure that PhD candidates are properly prepared to write their thesis and to defend it in the viva voce examination.
