Java Requirements for Online Chat

In order to use the online chat, support for Java must be enabled in your Web browser. If you do not see the "applet" (program) for the chat load in your browser when you log into the chat, your browser might not have Java enabled, or you might not have Java installed on your computer.

First, make sure that Java is enabled in your browser. If you do not see the choice to enable Java, you probably do not have it installed on your computer. You will need to download and install the Java software if this is the case.

Recommended version: Java 1.5 or above

Enable Java

To enable Java in your browser, follow the instructions below.

Internet Explorer for PC

• Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options"
• Select the Advanced Tab, and scroll down to "Java (Sun)" or to "Microsoft VM"
• Check the box next to the "Use JRE" or "Use Java 2" listing under "Java (Sun)" or to the "Java console enabled" listing under "Microsoft VM"
• Next, select the Security Tab, and select the "Custom Level" button
• Scroll down to "Scripting of Java applets"
• Make sure the "Enable" radio button is checked.
• In the section marked "Microsoft VM", if it exists, make sure that "Disable Java" is NOT selected. If it is selected, deselect it by selecting "High Safety".
• Click OK to save your preference.

Note: if you did not see "Java (Sun)" or "Microsoft VM" listed in the choices under the Advanced tab in your Internet Options, you will need to download and install Java on your computer.

Internet Explorer for Mac

• Choose "Explorer" from the top file menu, then choose "Preferences".
• Under "Web Browser" in the left-side pane, click "Java".
• Under "Java Options" on the right-side, make sure that "Enable Java" is checked.
• Click "OK".

Firefox for PC

• Choose "Tools" and then "Options.." form the top menu.
• From the left-side panel, choose "Web Features".
• Under "Web Features" on the right-side panel, make sure that the box next to 'Enable Java' is checked.
• Click "OK".

Firefox for Mac

• Choose "Preferences" from the "Firefox" menu.
• Select the 'Content' icon.
• Make sure 'Enable Java' is checked.
• Close the Preferences window.

Netscape 7.x for PC

• Choose "Edit" and then "Preferences" from the top menu.
• In the 'Category' panel, highlight "Advanced".
• On the right side of the box, make sure 'Enable Java' is checked.
• Click "OK".

Netscape 7.x for Mac

• Choose "Preferences" from the "Netscape" menu.
• In the 'Category' panel, highlight "Advanced".
• On the right side of the window, make sure 'Enable Java' is checked.
• Click "OK".

Netscape 8.x for PC

• Choose "Options" from the "Tools" menu.
• In the left-side panel of the Options window, select "Site Controls".
• On the right-side panel of the Options window, make sure that the "Site List" tab is selected.
• In the section labeled 'Web Features' make sure that "Enable Java" is checked.
• Click "OK".

Safari for Mac

• Choose "Safari" from the top file menu, then choose "Preferences".
• Click on the "Security" icon.
• Under "Web Content" make sure that the box next to 'Enable Java' is checked.
• Click "OK".

Note: if you do not have Java installed on your computer, you will need to download and install it before you will be able to enable Java in your browser.

Download and Install Java

If you do not have the Microsoft VM or a Java VM installed on your machine, you will have to install one.

Click the Free Download button. Accept the security warning to download and install the Java Plug-in. In most circumstances, when you install this Java program it will automatically enable Java in your Web browser. If after installing this program you still do not see the chat room, please try closing and restarting your browser if you have not already done so. If you did close and restart your browser and you still cannot access the chat room, you may need to follow the instructions at the top of this page to enable Java in your Web browser.
