MBA News: Toughest Year Ever at HBS?

Many MBA candidates learned their fates this week, after patiently (or maybe impatiently?) waiting for HBS to release its admissions decisions. Of course, for those who were disappointed by the results, it is difficult to take solace in the clichés offered by the admissions offices, pertaining to the competitiveness of the application process and the quality of applications this year. But, is there some truth behind the clichés? Could this year actually be that competitive? The answer, at HBS at least, is yes.

Gaining admission to HBS this year will be challenging  not only because of the volume of applications but also because of the quality of applicants – a fact to which HBS Dean Jay Light attested on his Virtual Learning Series call (December 16th).  During this alumni call, for paid members of HBS’s alumni associations, Dean Light told listeners that applications in the first round were up by 24% (which would indeed put HBS on pace to receive a record number) and declared that this was the “best set of applicants ever.”  Dean Light added that it was the biggest cyclical response recorded in the history of the school. According to a listener, Dean Light stated that the school was considering taking in extra students and joked that they may even add an extra section. We would not recommend that MBA candidates hold their breath for the extra section, but it is possible that HBS may try to squeeze a few extra seats into the classroom. Time will tell…

While I'm not from McKinsey, let me chime in because I think you're asking this for the wrong reasons. While it may indeed be helpful for one to get some idea on how long it generally takes to apply to business school, it is also true that the process does not take the same amount of time for everyone. While Sunjie38 is telling you a factual observation that the people he/she knows had all applied before Jan 08, I personally began preparations in late Aug/early Sept of 07 for admission in the 08 class (and I actually applied R1- that's about a one and a half month turnaround time from starting to look at business schools to actually turning in the application).

So my point is, it absolutely differs for everyone. Many people take a lot of time to prepare their applications when in fact the process really doesn't have to be that long; some others do their applications quickly when actually they might benefit from more refining and revision. What works for Sunjie38 and his/her friends may or may not work for you.

If you think MBA is something you really need for your life, your whole life before your MBA application is used to prepare for it. Every step counts, one way or another. PERIOD.
