MM看来是句子没读懂吧。

主语是“Thomas Eakin's powerful style and his choices of subject”

后面一个破折号算是同位语，用来进一步解释his choices of subject的，这些subject包括

1、the advances in modern surgery

2、the discipline of sport

3、the strains of individuals in tension with society or even with themselves

后面的his指的就是Thomas Eakin，而they指的是句子的主语Thomas Eakin's powerful style and his choices of subject
