答案是D

我在D和E中徘徊，虽然我最后还是选了D，但是有疑问

1、D中，it是否指代不清？如果it指代number,那不成了GMAT经常考的run-on了吗？如果it指代前面一句话，那不是应该用ing或者新名词么？

2、我排除E的理由

后面用ing，意思是number的rises and falls事实上确实是一种温度计，而句子意思是”可以做为“一个温度计，逻辑上似乎有问题

但我不确定。我这个想法来自于OG11 122题对C的解释

”McClintock^'s simile creates an image that is not real; the use of the verb
            do indicates the pearls' movement as a reality“

还有人说E的possibly用法错，但我不明白哪里错了

有关此题，前人已经有些讨论。这个链接希望可以解答你的疑惑。

在Prep破解版里，有关possibly的用法错误，是因为选项A里面的情态动词通常不能省略或更改，在正确选项中应该保留can或者相应的语气。而possibly的意思与can不同，不能随便代替。

但是，我仍然有和你同样的疑问就是D选项的谓语动词在哪里？

 把D选项代入原文，得到的句子中，我找不到and前一句的谓语动词。

可能LZ把OG10有一道對run-on的explanation理解錯了
OG10上是說:
"句子 and 代詞(指代並列的句子的主語)+謂語"會是一個run-on, 因為沒有comma *and* 在 "and"之後的句子的主語跟並列的句子的主語一樣...

it指代单数主语the number of chirps, 与未划线部分as an对应。这样理解就清晰了。

那是不是就是说, “主语+句子, and 主语/代词+句子”是正确的；而 “主语+句子 and 主语/代词+句子（没有逗号）”是错误的呢？

语法题目的答案是比出来的。

这题D里面的it没有指代不清的嫌疑呀。因为用排除法，其他选项都有明显错误。

E错误的原因：请看我找到的链接，有关possibly用法。另外，serving放在句末做伴随状语使用错误，有作后置定语修饰temperature的歧义存在。
