说说本人的愚见

1.我觉得这里大家都把and看成平行标志要求前后的完全平行，欠妥。这个and与其强调它平行标志的作用，更不如说成是它在句意上起的承接的作用。而且and前后都是句子，并没有语法问题。
意译下：开了矿，然后就有更多供给。
看上去很正常的说。

2.关于supplies of coal，原句中定从修饰coal，很合理：用于出口的煤炭
若到e，变成修饰supplies，变成：用于出口的供给（有点奇怪呀）
再退一步说，如果原文没有不合理，为什么不使用原文呢？

3.ls同学说表自然存在的there were直接导致前面的when从句失去逻辑意义，这点我持相反意见。正是因为是there were，when从句才有意义。
这样比较一下吧：

when canals and eventually railroads reached into the region, there were substantial supplies of coal that was  exported to the nation’s growing mills, forges, factories, and railways.
当运河和铁路到达这片（煤田）区域，就会有大量用于出口的煤的供给。

as canals and eventually railroads reached into the region, substantial supplies of coal were exported to the nation’s growing mills, forges, factories, and railways.
当运河和铁路到达这片（煤田）区域，就有大量煤炭供给出口到……

第二句重心是出口这个动词，到达煤田区域和出口似乎关系有点远……
第一句中心是存在，到达煤田区域和有更多的煤炭供给，是有必然关系的，这个“有”正说明，用表自然存在的there were很合理。

4.还有最后一点，我觉得应该提一下，我觉得e中as用的不好。别忘了as有时和when一个意思，也有because的意思。比起when只有一个引导时间的选择，用as不是会相对引起歧义么？被理解成“因为……”

LZ在找key points上很正确，但这两个句子的缺点相比较，显然还是要选E  因为supplies无伤大雅，没有改变意思，但A的there be+抽象名词，  显然就是wordy and awkard  GMAT的思路就是忌讳这种redundant的表达方式
