10/27/07: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Observation or studying animals can help us to learn human nature.

No one can deny that human being is a kind of animals with so many advanced characteristics and some other common characteristics with other animals such as love between family members, corporation with others in the dangerous situation and avarice or selfish. Considering this fact, some people hold the idea that we can learn human nature by observing or studying animals including their behaviors or some other aspects. Admittedly, there is a certain amount of truth in it, but those people fail to consider some disadvantages of studying animals and omit some more important and efficient way to learn human nature. So as far as I am concerned, I disagree with this idea for the following reasons.

Firstly, there are so many important differences between animals and human beings which make us have a large barrier to learn human nature by studying animals. For example, human beings have more complex society and mind as well as different kinds of language s such as Chinese, English, and German and so on. So this also result us to have more complex behavior such as region, war, technology, and so on. Furthermore, with the faster development of human society comparing with other animals, there are some new behaviors that may be so different from other species such as suicide because of the pressure of competition. All of these behaviors are the result of inspire produced by human nature. Therefore, it is impossible for us to study the sampler behaviors of animals to represent or learn human nature.

Secondly, even some special kinds of animals have more common nature with human beings, we can not discovery those mysterious connection between this species and human being. As we know among all kinds of animals, the Chimp zees have the closest connection with human beings, and just due to this, so many people are contributing themselves to study whether or not this kind of animals is the ancestor of human beings. But until now, people cannot certainly know the answer. According the recent study in American, we know that Chimp zees can learn human language but cannot use it to communication, so that even this kind of superficial research cannot be proved, what reason for us to learn human nature which is a deep subject by studying those special animals?

Thirdly, the development history of human being have a long period of time, which make us accessible to learn human nature deeply through both the history and our current society. As we know, human being have advanced so much by studying human history, through which, we learn technologies and improve them such as medical treatment and electronic technology. In addition, we also learn some lesson from the wars, diseases, nature disasters and so on. From those examples, we know that it is only those human in the history that share the same human nature with us instead of those animals, so that it has the most significance to study human history to learn the essence of human nature.

In conclusion, some people may consider researching animals is the most efficient way for us to learn human being, but what we want to know is not 'animal’s nature', but 'human nature', so that we cannot omit so many significant differences between human beings and other animals. So I still insist on my opinion.
