GMAT Prep 語法求助

首先 我是在電腦上做的 所以題目編號跟大家手邊的恐怕不合 但短時間內我找不到哪裡有crack可以看到所有的題目 敬請見諒 麻煩nn告知哪裡找的到prep的語法題

20.
In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle other stars.

A. most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle
B. most of them as large or larger than Jupiter and circling
C. most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, circling
D. mostly at least as large as Jupiter, which circle
E. mostly at least as large as Jupiter, circling

The official key is C. My questions is, the last phrase "circling" in C is a modifier. A modifier usually modifies the last word of the preceding sentence/phrase. So in this case, "circling" should modify "Jupiter". But is Jupiter circling other stars? Did the sentence not mean to say that those newly detected 80+ planets are circling other stars?

Unfortunately though, C is grammatically correct. >.<

30. As the former chair of the planning board for 18 consecutive years and a board member for 28 years, Joan Philkill attended more than 400 meetings and reviewed more than 700 rezoning applications.

A. As the former

B. The former

C. Former

D. She was

E. As the

答案是E 但是A哪裡不對呢 太wordy嗎

former must be removed not for grammatical reasons but to correct the meaning of the statement.

With "former" left in there it would imply that the women had the role of "former chair" for the 18 consecutive years.

Instead she was the actual chair for those 18 years. She is now the former chair but was not such during those 18 cons years. hope this helps.

the 20 one:

may your options, especially C is incorrect. In my prepS, the original question is below:

A. most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle

B. most of them as large or larger than Jupiter and circling

C. most of them at least as large as Jupiter, circling

D. mostly at least as large as Jupiter, which circle

E. mostly as large or larger than Jupiter, circling

首先你的概念中有错误,Gmat中从来没有说过ving是修饰前面的名词,因为,+ving也有可能修饰前面一个句子表示伴随状语。

第二,这里的most of them。。是插入语,所以你去掉不影响你的观点,那么circling是直接修饰planets.

这题看的是逻辑意思,说这个主席掌管的18年,应该是他当道呀,而不是说作为掌管18年的前任主席。。只有18年后了,才能说他是前任主席。。
