    这题是说明要靠近修饰, 还有修饰的作用

1.on earth
adv.
在世上, 究竟... 放在前面, 状语, 这里可能就会出现歧义....不是在地球上这个意思.

on  earth, 是修饰indication 那么它要紧跟修饰的词, 放在它的后面,

2.rate 是由: (at which trees grow ,as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks. ) 这个定语一大串修饰,

没办法, 放在前面影响句子结构, 所以, 只能倒装... 使, 定语紧接着修饰的名词.

3. 还有一种更简单直接的理解, 介词结构实际上是可以做主语的--- 那么我们不用考虑倒装, 或者直接就这么想..(

例子：
Among those who escaped was a man conviced for murder.(朗文当代英语大辞典
                第49页), )

例子：
Among those who escaped was a man conviced for murder.(朗文当代英语大辞典
        第49页), )

可是我怎么知道on earth 到底是应该作为整句话的状语还是修饰indication呢？原句也看不出来MS……还有那个C 是只有on earth这一个问题吗？赐教！

怎么这么多人马后炮呢？原句并没有表现出ON EARTH是修饰哪个的意图。而且放在前面和indication后面的区别到现在也没人能够说清楚，感觉都是拼命往答案上面凑。

这道题目on earth具体修饰谁很难一下子判断出来。

但首先要知道是倒装，这样就能排除AB，主谓一致决定要用is而不是are
