大全-14-12

12.   Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.

(A) merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors

(B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors

(C) merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do

(D) and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in unclear reactorsE

(E) and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart

此题我选A, 答案是E

我选A的理由是:

1. 我觉得A中merging可以修饰is the force (即前面整个句子)

2. 我觉得E中split them apart的them指代不清.

请教大家.

选A有歧义,到底是not splitting them apart as in nuclear reactors,还是merging和not spliting都as in nuclear reactors呢?

Participle clauses with adverbial meaning often give information about TIME or REASON and RESULT.
Both "power" and "merge" as verbs should paralell each other, because either of them is not intended to modify the other in terms of time, reason or result.
According to the above two rules, we can exclude Options A,B and C.

The usage of as: In option D, "as" is used, as a conj, to make a comment or to add information about what you have just said. If we choose to use "as", then it is "as do nuclear reactors" ("as nuclear reactors do" will also do the job but we prefer to use inversion after as and than in formal writing language. But we don't invert subject and verb when the subject is a pronoun.) This is not the only problem of D, at least in my opinion. "merges one thing but does not split the same thing" is redundant, because these two ideas obviously repeat each other.

You said that in E the word "them" refers ambiguously. What do you think the word may refer to?

Thanks 糖棠8875 and dphxmg!

Especially thanks for the opinion that "Participle clauses with adverbial meaning often give information about TIME or REASON and RES"!

After thinking for a while, I agree that E is the right answer. And below is my ways of eliminating wrong options. Just add more different perspectives:

12.   Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.

(A) merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors
                [not parallel]

(B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors

(C) merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
                 [not parallel]

(D) and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in unclear reactors
                [not parallel]
E

(E) and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart
