My friend is rejected from MIT PHD program.  

Her background is UBC master, GPA 4.0 (ALL A), recommendation letter from famous professors.  re-accepted by UBC's PHD program.

My GMAT tutor is accepted by MIT, same PHD program.

Background: Stanford master, GMAT 780, recommendation letter from famous prof too.  British.

关于ph.d,我在想：是不是研究背景更重要些？因为你的朋友的gmat真是，按照老美的说法，ridiculous high，真厉害。我再usnews上看到mit的录取平均分在700分左右。所以我想，不仅仅看gmat，还有发表的论文，或做过的project,或者你是个经验丰富的cio,都很重要。

我个人理解：gmat一定要上平均线，当然越高越好。研究是非常重要的。我也想申请mit的phd program. 不知道你的朋友是不是缺少了论文，还是别的什么材料比较弱。如果不是，我也要打退堂鼓了。省点申请费吧。
