Sauder is strong in academic research, but relatively weak in student placement, esp. for international students. As far as I know, Sauder is strong in finance and supply chain, as for information technology, I don't have much info. Those who concentrated in finance from my class got good jobs after graduation (investment banking, venture capital, etc) Pros of Sauder Program: 1. Shorter period: you save money and time. In addition, Sauder charges the same tuition fee to both international students and domestic ones. You may never find such a deal at other intuitions. 2. Integrated Core program: you will have a chance to learn every aspect in regard to business management 3. International learning environment: Over 50% students are from all over the world. Very diversified student body. 4. Natural beauty: Vancouver is famous for its outstanding living condition. This was also my primary reason choosing UBC when I decided to do a MBA. I love this city and I have some close friends here. 5. Closer connection with China: Vancouver is Canada's Pacific-Gate towards Asia. You may benefit a lot if you consider going back to China after the MBA, since you will have a good opportunity to network with business people from Asia here in Vancouver, esp. those from China and Hongkong. 6. New MBA House: you enjoy exclusive MBA residence on campus. That is really cool. We didn't have the luxury back then. 7. Exchange program: you will have a chance to study at a partner business school (over 25 choices ) for 3 months. That would be a great experience. Cons: 1. Teaching staff: not so strong compared with those from US business schools. Sauder is very good in terms of research, but less competitive when it comes to real stuff (if you know what I mean). 2. Career advancement: I don't know what to say on this. The career centre at Sauder didn't help too much. But I guess it will be better in the coming years, after all, North America is recovering from the financial crisis. 3. Vancouver: although it is a wonderful city to live in, it is not a good choice for employment. So many immigrants from China and Hongkong. Very fierce competition here with less job opportunities. However, Vancouver's favorable location does give herself a lot of credits. Again, if you are competent enough, you can find a job in your field. “The best business schools in Canada are all in the Eastern part, such as Rotman and Ivey. Other business schools will benefit you more in terms of job seeking, for most of them are close to the Greater Toronto Area, which is the financial and economic centre of Canada. I've been to Rotman and found it a good business school. You may do more research on your own. ”
2nd email I got some help from the career center @ Sauder, but not too much. After all, I was an international student. You must be very strong to be hired by local employers (language issue+work visa+long-term commitment, they worry a lot). As I know, two of my classmates are working for RIM now, and two are working for Telus. Again, if you have a strong background and nice experience in the related industry, you are in! Top employers do recruit @ Sauder and UBC. I feel that MBA just gives you more credit but cannot aid you in every aspect. The most important factors that count when you are looking for a job: experience and network (language ability also crucial). |
