tingting, if i were you, i would pick NYU. What i think is... the relationship between professors and students, sometimes, is just like the relationship between men and women. Your professor do not want you to choose NYU because of the burden of responsibility. Because he does not want you to blame him in future. Yet it doesnt mean that he does not want you to go NYU. He just does not want you to go NYU because of responsibility. If you really go to NYU, I am sure he will be very happy and he will take very good care of you and your research. In my opinion, both NYU and Columbia are very good in Marketing. Maybe Columbia is better. But i think the difference is very small as both of them are VERY GOOD SCHOOLS. Honestly having a good mentor/supervisor is more important than the school name and ranking, esp. the reputation and location of two schools are in fact very very close. What i think is.. .if you go to NYU, the prof will thank and appreciate you a lot. He will be very good to you and will help you A LOT in job market in future. If you go to Columbia, i think, undoubtedly, it will ruin the relationship. Maybe you can find some other good professors in Columbia, but you never know.. there is always a risk when u go to a new place. I have worked for almost 4 years before application. So I really know how the real world works and I know how important relationship is. Even in academic world, relationship is still something VERY IMPORTANT. You will see your professor in many many occassions. He will also be a journal editor looking at your submitted paper. If you are choosing between Columbia and some other schools, lets say, 2nd tier or 3rd tier, then obviously the answer will be Columbia. But given NYU and Columbia are in fact very close in many aspects, if I were you, I would consider the factor called RELATIONSHIP. And I would choose NYU. U know, it is really lucky that you have already started your research projects even before your first semester in PhD. This is something you have to treasure as it will be some very important asset to you when you graduate. |
