Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Recently, there is a general debate on the campus over the phenomenon that whether students should be required to attend classes or choose classes freely. Then we are faced a choice between them. From my perspective, classes should be optional for students. A multitude of reasons could conspire towards my viewpoint such as students' interest, major and so on. Herein, I would like to explain a few of the most pertinent ones, as follows.
First and foremost, different students have different interest. For example, some students, not majored in history, do not enjoy the history class. Must they attend the history class? Someone may say that students should study different subjects that they have a broad knowledge scope. In this light, if students choose too many classes they do not enjoy, their time, as well as, energy would not be shared too much to the subjects that are important and appealing to them. What's more serious, students may regard university classes very tedious and lose faith.
Additionally, most university students have four years to pursue knowledge in university. How should they arrange time? Companies require students with specific knowledge to work them, not a student broad knowledge scope in that they hire students for the sake of profit. Consequently, I am convinced that students are ought to spend more time on the subjects appropriate for their career life, rather than, those, for them, useless class.
Last but not least, students have more opportunities to make more friends. In dealing with career, one can not but admits that friends, especially made in university, can do a great favor. The example of my brother Henry captures the essence of what I am getting at. His company once faced bankruptcy, but then, his college student, a successful entrepreneur, infuse large sums of money into Henry's company, then the computer revived. I have reasons to believe, the help of my brother's student derived mainly from the profit. However, if they are not friends, there is little, if any, hope for the company to revive.
Nevertheless, there are also some advantages of students' required to attend classes. For one thing, it is much convenient for the university's management. For another, to alleviate some students absence from some important classes who have to attend the classes yet not interested in them.
Considerable though the benefits that students should be required to attend classes enjoys are, it pales in comparison to the merits brought by students choosing classes freely, if all the reasons above are ruminated on. Notwithstanding this, students should responsible for them, that is, to attend the classes they have the necessity to attend. |
