Research has shown that..., and that...　从句里的代词（做主语）应该指代到主句吧，就是research，怎么能指代到从句里呢？我觉得特别别扭．

没有这样的规则吗？是说只要能明白就无所谓吗？

这个是对的have shown that and that。其中这个when speaking是时间状语，第一个that的主语是individuals，第二个也是individuals，所以用they来代指，避免重复。
